There is a Spunky in the comic, but it's a kangaroo. Odd coincidence.

Not really a coincidence. Robert Farrell, Ajax's Publications' owner, wanted to take advantage of "Casper The Friendly Ghost's success, by starting a copycat series, but wanted to fill out the new series' stories with re-prints of comic book stories he owned, and were ready to print. So, he named his new Ghost character, "Spunky Spook", because he already owned the rights to "Spunky Kangaroo", whose stories were ready to print. While the new "Spunky Spook" stories would be being written and drawn up, he could have a few "Spunky Spook" magazine covers drawn up, and start up his new series earlier than having to wait 5-6 months.
The first 2 "Spunky" issues included "Spunky Kangaroo". And, the next 2 included "Spunky Spook". Unfortunately, after only 4 issues, Farrell saw that the new series wasn't selling much. He changed the series and character name twice in the next 2 issues, first to "Super Spook", and then, to "Mighty Ghost". But sales didn't improve. So after 6 issues, the series was cancelled.
The same thing happened with Ajax's new "Super Cat" series, with "Super Cat" on the covers, but not appearing inside the book in its first 2 issues, but, finally appearing by Issue Number 3. And the series was cancelled after only 4 issues.
Despite having several funny animal titles operating during 1950-54 and 1957-58, published by Star, Ajax, and Red Top Publishing imprints ("Frisky Animals", "Billy Bunny", "Super Cat", "Holiday Comics", "Fun Comics", "Super Animals 3-D Comics", "Funny Fables", "Kiddie Kapers", "Frisky Animals On Parade", "Full Of Fun", and "Mighty Bear Comics"), probably 95% of those 60+ issues' pages, were reprints of either Farrell's 1945-46 "Hi-Ho Comics" or Novelty's "Frisky Fables" (purchased at liquidation bargain-basement prices).
