I see on GCD that a lot of Golden Age stories are atributed to Charles Nicholas, as far as I have been able to find out, the first Charles Nicholas was Jack Kirby, the name was also used by both Chuck Cuidera, and Charles Wojtkoski, who both seems to actually have had Charles Nicholas as first, and middle names, but is there a timeframe for when these three used the pen-name, or do I need to study each story to find out some more.
I also see several issues with both Charles Nicholas and either Cuidera or Wojtkoski credited for other stories, not to mention a lot of pen-names, like Story Weaver on Paul Bunyan (National Comics)

Just go to http://www.bailsprojects.com and put in the pen name.

There was a whole section on pen names in volume four of the original paper Who's Who, if you can find it.

To me the tricky thing is to distinguish between actual consistent pen names (regularly used by the same artist(s)) and "house names" which appeared as credits for certain strips/characters, but which many artists may have worked under. As I recall, Fiction House had a lot of these house names - which are of not much value in identifying anyone.

One thing is if it is only a Fiction House name, but some of the Iger shop house names can be found on books from several of the different companies they delivered stories for, I'm pretty sure this is the case for Charles Nicholas, I seem to remember seeing the name used not only for Quality, but for other companies as well.

And that takes me back to my original question, witch "Charles Nicholas" was using the name at different times/places ?

Seems like the Charles Nicholas narfstar refers to is not the use of the Iger shop pen name, on comicbookdb he is refered to as Charles Nicholas 'Chas' , also signing as Nicholas Alascia when working with Vince Alascia.

Can I look away from this Charles Nicholas when trying to figure out the artist on Quality/Fiction House/Fox titles, or is he also in the mix on these books ?

Does not seem likely a house name would be used by several companies. My guess is Chas was probably the man on some of those. JVJ would be the most likely to know. He also signed as Chasal with Alascia and some other variations with others that I can not think of. I believe he had a pen name with Trapani also

A LOT of these questions are answered in the Who's Who http://www.bailsprojects.com. The Charlton Nicholas is the same one who was in the Iger shop back in the '40s. His real name was Charles Wojtkowski (sp?) and the confusion arises because "Charles Nicholas" was an Iger Shop house name BEFORE Wojtkowski took it for his own - unlike me, he probably gave up trying to get people to spell (and pronounce) his last name correctly. So in the early days (1939-42) you have a real person using the name AND the same name being used over a variety of Iger Shop styles - in the WW this byline is listed as "Charles Nicholas 1"

It's all pretty clear if you just look at the Who's Who. Why should anyone go anywhere else to get a question like this answered? Most personnel questions are either answered there or it provides an excellent starting point for research. Bookmark it.
