It's been a million years since I read "Hopalong Cassidy" but I seem to recall he was older in the books, and somewhat crochety. Or do I remember it all wrong?

(Edit: I sure did have it wrong. I should have checked archive.org before I wrote. Mulford's books are there (Copyright 1913, well within the public domain.) Bill Cassidy is a "youth" who is "not yet of age." Never trust a million-year-old memory.)

Anyway, it's an entertaining story. Winslade's art walks the line between straight and cartoony. The overall effect is pleasing. Interesting to read his Bear Alley bio.

Apparently Hoppy was introduced as the crotchety old coot with a wooden leg long before the stories you read. Illustration from book of 1905

IIRC The Leatherstockings character was also first seen in print as a dried up old timer near his death. The later books focused on the character as a much younger man.
