This first episode of the series introduces us to both Holmes and Watson in such a way that even those unfamiliar with their characters and the dynamics between the two would quickly grasp the gist of their relationship in upcoming teleplays.

With Holmes' quick use of observation and logic, and Watson's scepticism about the conclusion that his partner reaches we are sent off on a tutorial of what will form the crux of this series. The dialogue is crisp and plot is as complex as a half hour episode would allow. All in all a series that is both enjoyable and stands the test of time.

Glad you enjoyed it Rob!
This series was light-hearted but quite good. I think this Sherlock smiles and grins more than I have seen the character do in any other series.

Cheers!

The bit about not knowing or caring about whether the earth moved around the sun or vice versa reminded me of a survey of Japanese school systems.
The students all made great grades and were very sharp when it came to math but an unusually high percentage did not know the earth orbited the sun and believed that the sun only rose in the east on the northern hemisphere. They believed the sun must rise  in the west on the southern hemisphere.
These were college students at that.
In some cases they found that the elementary schools there had never even mentioned these things. They focused on preparation for higher learning and ignored completely the basics.
