This hand-wringing about destitute titled foreigners marrying American women for their money continued for some time. In the 1890s Life magazine frequently harped on the subject, including in several Charles Dana Gibson cartoons. The Every Week article shows that such things did happen, though I doubt it was a national emergency. Nativism played a big part in the discussion: how dare American girls not marry fine American men? Foreign suitors were often pictured as stooping, scrawny somewhat effeminate men with pencil mustaches and oiled hair. In the 20s and 30s the pendulum swung the other way and the stories were about penniless gold-diggers who angled to wed rich Europeans for their money.
