Interesting that of all the places they could have put the coupons, they chose the top of the inside front cover -- the very piece that would be stripped and sent back to the publisher (distributor?) for credit...

I'm sure the placement of the coupon was 100% deliberate.  My guess is they figured the lack of the coupon would discourage kids from buying stripped copies.  Or, if you want to be even more cynical about Fox's general business practices, he was probably hoping kids would vandalize the books in the store to get the coupons, making the books unreturnable so he got paid for them.
