These names always had an energy first name, demonstrating that 'Flash' Gordon was the template.
You have pointed out, Blast, Cosmic and Spark, and this book has Sub [marine] , Stardust and Space.
This tendency disappeared by the late 50s, Early 60's. We had character names starting with THE, [The Phantom, The Shadow, The Flash, The Spectre, The Blue Beetle, The Batman] or/and ending in MAN [ or occasionally 'Woman' ] [Spiderman, Hawkman, Iron Man, Wonder Man] or just single names [Tarzan, Korak, Ka-zar] or military titles [Various Captains and a lieutenant, a major or a general or two.] Oh, and we had princes, Kings, Queens and Counts - but they are usually villains.
What reads as quaint today is the use of names like Wilson, Saunders and Smith in the Character blurbs in the opening panel. Although, Smith is a perennial, and works well. EternitySmith anyone?
And wasn't Wilson a basketball?
Cheers!
