Okay, but the text of the story *does* explicitly confirm that they are called the Purple Gang because they all wear purple suits. It really was a case of the colourist not paying attention to the script.

I owned the album, 'The Purple Gang Strikes' Was something like 'Jug Band Music' I recollect.
In 1998 the band reformed and recorded an album, 'Night of the Uncool,'
Never seen a copy of this.
