Looking for source of Wally Wood story
« on: November 21, 2010, 03:08:22 PM »

This past week I was looking through one of my GAC downloads, Western Crime Busters #10 (April 1952) from Trojan and recognized the Wally Wood illustrated Lariat Lucy story "Flaming Justice" as the same story that Greg Theakston recently reprinted in his black and white Wood collection Wild Wood (Pure imagination-2010).
On second glance though I noticed that there were differences between the two stories in the art.  The Trojan version seems to have been "cleaned up" to cover more of Lucy's cleavage and lengthen her skirt to show less leg.
So it wood seem that Greg sourced his reprint from another publication featuring the same story (possibly published prior to Western Crime Busters #10) but in an unexpurgated version. Anyone have any idea where this uncensored version first saw print?

Best

It originally appeared in a Trojan pulp magazine, Joe,
My memory sucks, so I don't know what it was called, but there were actually two stories in the pulp issue, both by Wood. I'm pretty sure that Greg would have named his source when he reprinted the unexpurgated story. Have you checked the reprint package?

The pulp story appeared about a year earlier than the comic.

Jim,

Thanks very much for the info.

While Greg often credits the original sources there were a couple of early stories in this most recent Wood collection that were uncredited as to source and a couple of others where Greg apparently goofed on the source ID.  I had managed to track down the correct info on all but the Lariat Lucy story and now you've given me a good lead on that one.

Thanks Again
