I was just listening to late night conspiracy talk radio, they were discussing the Face on Mars, and I remembered this interesting little tidbit that was actually mentioned in the conversation on the radio show.

Apart from the photo being reminiscent of The Phantom's Skull Ring, we all know that S&K were well aware of the mysteries of other planets and might actually have visited them.  As it's quite obvious that the Negative Zone exists (I know that 'cos I read it in a comic) , the face on Mars must be real but governments couldn't reveal the truth back then as the UFOs told them not to.  And any way, we've been told lies about the canals on Mars - anyone can see them and Jet Morgan found them in the documentary, The Red Planet.  I think that proves it.
