Rare defined
« on: June 01, 2008, 12:23:58 AM »

I see in the Overstreet where a 'Rare' classification is given to books that have 10 to 20 copies estimated to exist.

I recently mangled a Kirby cover KO Komics No.1 which I thought at one time carried such but no longer or I may have been mistaken.

I have a few comics that do carry that 'rare' classification and now I'm wondering if others here on site might have any rare classification books in their collections.

Thanks

Comics-wise, I have several that Overstreet rates as "scarce", and a couple that Gerber rates as "7"'s (less than 50 known to exist)...

Pulp-wise, I have several books that Tim at Bookery's (the guy who wrote the price guide for pulps) has never heard of or seen...  and that I haven't seen before or since...

very rare- 1 to 10 copies estimated to exist
rare-        10 to 20 copies estimated to exist
scarce-     20 to 100 estimated to exist

Makes me wonder if there is a comic remembered from an established source of which no known copy presently exists.

As a general principle, assume that almost every book listed in Overstreet or Gerber as rare is probably twice as common as listed.  If they say 50 exist it's probably more like 100.

But yes, some books really are amazingly hard to find.
