I did so, because I had to upload a 1960 Charlton romance book.
And to honor the incredible work you guys are doing with this site.

100% honest truth I don't like people around my head with sharp implements and the last time I had a trim the guy was arrested a week later for strangling his partner with a dressing gown cord. Sweeney Todds!

Well my hair is not as long as you two gentlement anymore but I still enjoy you all's books so grow your hair down to your arse's I say. Me old man use to tell me in my longish hair days that you look like a freakin girl all ya needs is a dress. God bless his departed soul.

Found a German collector in a closed mine shaft in the Austrian Alps.
Ahh, the thing we do for horror...

Going to launch my redesigned website next month.

Nice write up, Tilliban.  (I really need to improve my German.  There's so much good stuff on your site).
Re. Black Books - excellent stuff. Still makes me laugh and I could act some of the episodes.  Young Ones has dated, I'm afraid.

Hi Tilliban,

No, it all went fine and the book is up and running thank you very much. The site mirrors the admins ... a bit slow. frequently heads off on a tangent, but eventually gets there.

Am off to spend 1/2 an hour cleaning CB+ Corporate HQ (aka my bedroom) so it is time to listen to a Hancock's Half Hour while I am doing it. Now one thing for certain is if that show has aged it just means it has matured into something even greater

I'm not familiar with HANCOCK'S HALF HOUR, but while I'm scanning, I usually turn one eye to my TV set where I'll watch DVDs.
Finished another run-through of series like COUPLING, I'M ALAN PARTRIDGE, LOOK AROUND YOU and the very wacky SEAN'S SHOW. Anyone ever seen that???

O blimey have you got a MAJOR treat coming!!!!!

He is arguably Britain's greatest ever comedian. Serious! For certain is he RIGHT up there no one would deny that. Also, he was the tragic clown

Find the "Blood Donor" and the "Radio Ham" for his TV stuff ... but his radio was as good if not better ... the middle to later ones ... they are in the public domain or at least very easy to find but some of recordings people have put up are not very good quality but there are normally better ones available.

I just watched HANCOCK'S "Twelve Angry Men" and "Blood Donor" as well.
That IS very fine comedy, indeed.
And considering it's around 1960... Jeez. Wasn't even born.
Though I was born in black and white.
Arrrgh, terrible joke.
I understand that Kenneth Williams was involved in the Hancock gang.
An actress friend of mine ("East" German actually) is a whatchacallit "relic hunter" for things which belonged to Kenneth Williams! A far out hobby, if you ask me.
She's got all the films, many stills and even a diary from the man...

If he'd still be alive, she would be STALKING him.

Firstly you have a good Christmas ...

Well thereby hangs a tale and a 1/2! Not to put too fine a point on it Tony Hancock is regarded as a comedy great .. well in fact beyond that, very arguably a real comic genius and the greatest British comic ever.

The radio shows featured Hancock living in a run down house in Cheam. An Australian named Bill Kerr was in most of them. Sid James was in a lot as well and he and Hancock were friends. Hattie Jacque played his secretary and Kenneth Williams played various characters (next door neighbour. police etc etc).

But bit by bit Hancock dispensed with them. and indeed eventually Galton and Simpson the writing team. Apparently it was not ego but insecurity. Anyway he committed suicide I think in the mid to late 60's. From what I have heard and seen he was a nice guy and people really liked him.

Coming back to Kenneth Williams he got "cheap laughs". I don't mean that in a bad way, but that is what he did and teh pubic loved it. You know "O hellllloooo" and the audience would laugh, Hancock was looking for purer comedy and indeed from what I read so was Kenneth Williams. (He was offered a raise for the Carry on films and refused it saying he shouldn't even be getting paid what he was for "making that rubbish" lol) Sid James was the last one to go and that was at least in part  because Hancock was worried they were becoming a double act.

Anyway I really recommend the radio shows .... they are on the net for free (some of the quality is not too good). The mid to later ones are the best ... but they are all good.

Couldn't agree more. My only quibble would be that Sid was often portrayed as a con man and would regularly "do" Hancock out of his cash.  We listen to the re-runs on Radio 4 Extra on Wed. evenings.
Kenneth Williams and cheap laughs?  Well, they don't come much cheaper, or funnier, than in Round The Horne.  I still don't know how they got away with it, given the law and social attitudes at the time.  Julian and Sandy are sublime.

Well yes ... some of the older stuff does make you wonder ...some of the 1920's papers we had were too hot for here.

Have always had a soft spot for Hancock and who hasn't for Sid James? Again I can understand where he was coming from .. just like you said ... Hancock will be ripped off by Sid .. only so many times and you start to loose it. Also his most famous work are him on his own. Personally I prefer Railway Cuttings and the "whole gang" cheap laughs or not. Plus the radio version ... I play it in the background quite often when I am working on the house or cooking. I listen to OTR rather than music.

The tragic thing with comedy ensembles is that they WILL break apart sooner or later.
Also tragic that most comedians get stuck on their routines.
They become prisoners of their own stage persona.
Ah, the cruelty of show business!
