the best GA horror stories
« on: July 19, 2008, 08:40:17 PM »

HI:
I am thinking on do an online (and free) e-book on Golden Age Horror Comics in Spanish, using the stuff posted here as a starting ground. My idea is to translate some of those comics in my native Spanish and give some context on the story of the apparition and success of horror comics, dispeling the idea that the only good horror comics were from EC.
Of course, this means to read and select many horror stuff. So, the idea behind that post is ask you what GA horror stories like best, to help me select the stuff.
only one rule
1 - The stuff must be available from this site, because i know that this is on public domain (so i am not cheating anyone if i do this for free) and is a frame of reference for us
welll, nothing more to say
if someone can helpe to prepare this i would be very interesed
see you

The 'Ghost Comics' series from Fiction House has neat material in it.

Some of the early ACG books are worth a look as are Simon and Kirby's Black Magic in the Prize Comics section.

Then there's the Harvey stuff, hard to believe that these books are from the same company that within a decade would be putting out Casper -The Friendly Ghost, Sad Sack, and Richie Rich !!!

Roberto,
I like the early ACG titles--Adventures into the Unknown and Forbidden Worlds.  The stories had varying lengths.  Text fillers exist as well.

Te gustaria hacer?

everybody thanks for the recomendations
started to look after the adventures into the unknown stuff. i like very much the ironic style of richard hughes. the guy definitively was at their best when writing tongue in cheek
phabox: i agree with you with harvey comics. I read years ago some issues translated into spanish in the mexican edition of black cat mysteries (called "misterios del gato negro"... a comic who survived in mexico the horror implosion publishing next the monster atlas comics of kirby ditko & all) and they definitively were scary and funny (a little in the knock off of EC comics also).
But a quesiton about harvey horror comics: are they in public domain? does anyone know?
and ghost comics of fiction house. gotta check out
anyone knows about ditko charlton stuff in the 50`s?

seeyou and thanks for the suggestions

Basically anything drawn by Wally Wood.

There was also a 3-D comic that was reprinted in a book I had as a kid about 3-D usage in media (I was a weird kid) that was from the reader's point-of-view of a guy going through a wax museum with a fun twist at the end. Scared the crap out of me when I was 10.

They aren't golden age, but my absolute favorite horror comics are the Marvel ones done in the '70s under titles like Where Monsters Dwell and Where Creatures Roam. Those are hilarious. :D
