I recently purchased a stack of Charlton GUNFIGHTERS comics,one issue(#54 the sheriffs vacation)has what looks to be Maneely pencils,i know he usually inked his own work but im  fairly certain these are his pencils with someone else on inks.And (#53 the james gang strikes)is with out a doubt Maneely pencils and inks.These of course would be reprints because this series started in 1979.Can anyone clarify this? i've never heard of him working for charlton,and comicbook database incorrectly identifies John Severin as the artist.If this aint Joe Maneely i'll eat my hat!

When Atlas imploded in 1957, LOTS of artists were out of work. DC was not accepting very many new hires, and the only outlet for many artists was Charlton. In 1958 Charlton comics you can find Maneely, Severin, Williamson, Torres, Sid Check, and even Gene Colan. That's also why the Classic Illustrated reissues and Specials are loaded with great talent. You haven't seen Angelo Torres and Gray Morrow until you've seen their Classics work. Even Prize and Harvey managed to incorporate a few unusually good people in 1958 and 1959.

So, yes, Maneely was (albeit briefly) at Charlton.

Speaking of charlton..one of my favorite artist is Pete Morisi vastly underated imo. ive read of a series he drew called jonny dynamite  does anyone know if this series has ever been collected? what happend to pete? and when and where did he start his career? his charlton work is all ive seen........thanks for the info on joe maneely jvj.

We have Johnny Dynamite in Charlton and Dynamite in Comic Media also Superior Stories #2 has a full length Morisi story.

Google turns up a couple of decent articles on Morisi, but it looks like he was a trained illustrator, started working at Fox (the GCD lists a lot of Timely and Gleason work, interestingly), moved over to Charlton and, sadly, passed away back in 2003 after retiring, both from illustrating and the NYPD.  I hope that helps.  He's one of my favorites, as well, with a deceptively simple style.
