Hey all...

This is my first upload in a very long time (the previous ones were as Bookcats, T-man issues)... anyways, here we have a freshly scanned, from paper, cover to cover Captain Marvel Jr. #103 (to replace the horrible fiche one on the site already).  To be honest, it's nothing amazing, but it's better than what we had before and a couple of the stories are somewhat amusing.  Enjoy!

Your scan is good.   As the guy who did the horrible fiche upload, I apologize.    But I've only got so many hours in a day, and only a very few are alotted for improving fiche.  Check some early Captain Marvel Adventures for more successful work.  And thanks.

I wasn't trying to disparage anyone's work with the fiche.. they are what they are and they are better than nothing.  I'm just glad I could replace one...  I personally wouldn't spend any time trying to improve a fiche, but that's just me...

I've said it before and i'll say it again, though no great lover of fiche scans myself they are still MUCH better than nothing and are fine gap fillers until the 'real' thing comes alone.

In the case of some ultra-rare books ( not always PD) these fiches are the closest many of us will ever come to reading them.

Yes, never think we don't greatly appreciate the fiche.  Sure, we would prefer paper copies.  But the fiche is infinitely better than no book at all.

I'll echo that sentiment, though I'm probably the least pro-paper, since I'm generally more interested in stories than artwork.  But I don't think Darkmark (sorry for speaking for you) was offended, since he, too, works from any paper that's available, I've noticed.

I also want to point out, as long as I'm typing here, that fiche enhancement has gotten much, much better in the past year or so.  I can't even begin to guess how it's done, but my eyes thank everybody who's been doing it.  Having worked with microfiche archives for other periodicals, I know what the source material looks like, and the recent results have really been almost miraculous.

Yeah, well, turning a decades-old muddy and reduced photograph made on cheap film into a crisp image is still black magic to me, no matter what the tools.  It's not like it's just out of focus--the detail is actually missing, in most cases.  But...you know all that, obviously, so let me just be impressed.

But as someone who does fiche edits (less lately, GAC keeps me hopping!) I feel the original scanner deserves a big hand as well.  Rolster (who's been MIA for months now ) perfected a superior method for scanning them and passed that info on to people like our own Ontology.  With such superior raw scans to work from it's not impossible to generate readable, if not exactly pretty, scans.  The colours blue and green seem to darken in most fiche scans and it's a bugger to fix without throwing all the other colours off.

I've just put up Starlight Romances #9 from Bell Features into the FTP (couldn't get the upload link to work).

Freshly scanned from a paper copy, it's a Canadian reprint of Fox comic, I think My Love Life (Fox, 1949 series) #8.  Blank inside front and inside back covers means that first page of first story is missing.  Cover is reprint of Hollywood Diary (Quality) #5 with June Allyson and Peter Lawford.  One funny thing is that the ads at the back of the comic are all direct reprints of the US ads (re-using the plates) but that someone went to the trouble of whiting out all the coupons, so you can see what's being advertised, but you can't order it!

Your file is a CBZ which is the usual complication for books I've uploaded.

I just tried downloading it myself and it does appear to be corrupt.  I checked my local copy and it's OK, so something must have gone wrong in the upload.  I had used FTP because the upload link wasn't working for me, and I just tried the upload link again and it sits for a while and then goes to "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" (maybe a problem in the php, maybe a slow connection on my part... it hasn't worked for me since it was "fixed").

The FTP I had used was part of the zip program I had used (CoffeeCup I think).  I don't think I'll bother with that again, since it seems to have corrupted the file.

The only other FTP option I have is command line and it's a pain.

Any other suggestions on Freeware?  Or can I put it up somewhere else and you can grab it from there?

If you use Firefox as your browser you can use FireFTP as an add-in that works well.

I recommend FireFox.  Once I went with it I didn't miss MS Explorer at all!

I have a couple sites I use IE for because of some java issues that I believe have since been fixed but still just use IE for them. Otherwise Firefox for me.
