Star Comics #7 Uploaded--More Star Coming
« on: February 20, 2009, 06:39:03 AM »

I scanned this Platinum Age baby in 2003.  16 pages with some Fred Guardineer art, including a two-page centerspread and a four-page Dan Hastings serial.  Those into politics and history might enjoy the King Cole's Court story, which takes on FDR's attempt to pack the Supreme Court.  Yep, this comic is that old.

Unfortunately I got it coverless off Ebay with the front cover provided by GCD, but no IFC, IBC or BC.  I've got Star #5 ready to go and my list says I have #3 and #9 as well, all from V1 like this one.

Star #5 is uploaded as well.  Not my scan, done by Marble River in 2003.  Missing an IFC with an FC from the Grand Comics Database, but otherwise complete, the comic includes one page of Windsor McKay's Little Nemo, and some nice Guardineer.

The Nemo art and story here is by Winsor (not WinDsor) McCay (not McKay), Jr., the son of the original Nemo creator. He seems to have tried unsuccessfully to make a buck by continuing Little Nemo in any fashion, but couldn't manage. If you want to learn more of McCay's history, try my biography of him at http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/mccay.htm

The mention of McCay and Little Nemo got me thinking about the high regard for that strip. While I recognize the merit of McCay and Carlson and the ilk, they are not among my favorites. I can see the genius but only really enjoy it in small doses. Matters of taste.

you echo my thoughts, narf. I'd rather look at either than read them. One thing that ALWAYS bothered me about McCay is his atrocious lettering. Why in the name of all things holy couldn't the man letter as cleanly as he could draw? That one aspect of the strip ALWAYS keeps me from really enjoying it.

Sigh...

I couldn't agree with you more Jim.  Perhaps if I'd seen it full page instead of the reprints which are at best tabloid size, the lettering wouldn't have been so bad.  One thing is it always looked like he was squeezing it in at the end.  Maybe that's why comic books always seemed to be lettered before the artwork was inked.

I think, unlike some classic strips, I appreciate Little Nemo more than I actually enjoy it.  I've got the huge one volume collection of the original run; it's beautiful to look at.  But it's not that fun to actually read, and what was considered appropriate back then also detracts...

Nice to know I am not alone. With all the accolades usually given I thought I was the odd man out.

LOL,
I know how you feel Narf.  I respect Ditko's work but other than his Dr Strange (Which I truly loved) and early Spiderman I haven't been nearly as impressed by him as I feel I 'should' be.

For me, the Ditko work that doesn't work as well is Spiderman, honestly.  I love his Doctor Strange, and the Fantasy shorts, and the Question.  I still think Spiderman hit his high point in the very first story in some ways.  (Mind you, I think the first Spiderman story is about as perfect a story as any I've ever read; comics or otherwise.)

Also, I never got Krazy Kat either.

I need to look at some early Krazy Kat comics to decide. I have some 1960's. I loved the 1960's Krazy Kat cartoons when they were on TV as a kid. I was actually a very sexist and  mean kid. I liked him hitting her on the head with the bricks. I do not doubt at all that had I not become a Christian I would have been a cheater and a wife beater. I thank God for the change at 14 or there is no telling what troubles I would have gotten into and where I would be today. BTW my wife and I met in church, so I know that I would not have her or consequently my son, so I have much to be thankful for.

You know I grew up watching Bugs Bunny.  Never once did I order something from Acme or jump off a roof and expect to hang in the air before falling....  but I did jump off some low roofs.  Who didn't?  But I blame Superman for that!  ;)

Never 'got' Krazy Kat, Nemo or early FF either.  Sorry those FF books paled beside early Spiderman and X-Men books.

Karen and I met in church, too, narf. I was the only altar boy with a beard (at 16 no less). And next month we're celebrating 38 years of living together. I'm grateful, as well. Don't miss the church, but I'm thankful everyday that it was there. No kids - though we've somehow accumulated 11-year-old twin nephews who live with us every weekend (like now!) Didn't plan on this, but I'm coping. (|:{>

snorK* Ha, yeah, wrote out the reply and realized I was deviating from the thread quite a bit so thought to copy/paste to a new topic and must have somehow hit Post in this thread.

Or something like that.
