Golden Age Cosmic Superheroes?
« on: April 23, 2009, 05:43:45 PM »

Howdy folks,

Does anyone have suggestions regarding superheroes from the Golden Age that are more cosmic in origin.

I know of a handful, like Stardust (Fox), Man of War (Centaur) and maybe The Detective Eye (Fox).

Any others people can think of?

What do you mean by Cosmic?

Does the Spectre qualify?  He was given his powers by "The Voice" -- essentially meant to be God.

According to is original origin (I believe but it might be the second one), Dr Fate was not human but was "created as he was" by the elder gods.  Does that qualify?

The Spectre, Dr fate yeah that's more like it.  Someone thats not a just a guy in a mask,
but maybe has supernatural or cosmic (alien) powers.

Any pointers to stuff available on the Golden Age Comics site is appreciated.

MLJ's version of the Spectre was Mr. Justice check him out in Blue Ribbon comics and some others. Stardust would also be considered cosmic. Duke of Darkness would fit and looks like an early inspiration for Marvel's Doctor Strange. Quality's Uncle Sam could do a lot.

Heroes that are more than just " a guy in a mask":

The Shark from Centaur's Amazing Man Comics was the son of Neptune.  Also from Centaur (in Stars & Stripes) was Dr Synthe, an alien from the planet Luzor.  The Sentinel (Centaur again and found in either Liberty Scouts or Man of War) was created by the "Spirit of America".  From Ace Periodicals comes Vulcan, descendent of the god of fire.  The Purple Zombie from Eastern's Heroic Comics was brought back from the dead.  Sergeant Spook from Novelty's Blue Bolt Comics was the spirit of a policeman that lived in the spirit world but took on evil-doers in the mortal world.

There are also Mercury from Timely (the real Mercury) and Hurricane, also from Timely, who was more or less the same character but altered to be "the son of Thor".  Guess you could call the Golden Age Vision "semi-cosmic", as he was a strange character who materialized out of smoke.  And there were some cosmically evil characters such as Timely's Black Widow and MLJ's Lady Satan, about which nothing need be said.

You should also add such heroes as Kid Eternity (a youth who had been granted great powers - among them the ability to call on figures from history, mythology, and literature - by the being Mr. Keeper);, Phantasmo (a fellow like Dr. Strange who had the power to separate his spirit from his body and the spirit having Spectre-like powers); Wildfire (a lady who was given powers over fire by the fire god Vulcan); and Fantomah (particularly while Fletcher Hanks was handling her) to the list as well.
