I read on the Archie fans message board that Dark horse will be giving Archie the archive treatment.

How...odd.

They would already have relationships with printers and distributors, and know the approximate size of their fanbase and where the fans can be found.  Why give another publisher a (presumably significant) cut of the profits?

With this and outsourcing all the work on the superhero line (licensing to DC), does this mean that Archie is seeing some serious cashflow problems?  That'd stink.

Archie also recently signed a deal with a company to produce scans of their material with some 70s work (I believe) already being available.

Perhaps the Archives are for the MLJ heroes which would have to be done by scanning the comics which Dark Horse has already done on other properties.

I doubt there would be much money or interest beyond this site for the MLJ material.
Archie has done several 'Best of ' whatever decade archives.  Perhaps they lost money on them?
Being in the driver seat with the copyright they might have just negotiated a very nice deal with Darkhorse who I've noticed are getting more and more interested in doing 'prestige' type books these days.
