Another esoteric question about an obscure character...
« on: September 11, 2009, 09:15:38 PM »

Does anyone who uses this forum happen to know if the short-lived "Blazing Scarab" series in 'Champion' comics ever got to the point where it actually featured a costumed hero? I have downloaded the only issue of 'Champion' available here which features an episode of "Blazing Scarab," and that episode certainly suggests that the focus is on an archeologist or someone of a similiar nature who has an serial adventure with a "league of assassin"  and "the timeless world of the Blazing Scarab." I think there may be a misconception that the 'Blazing Scarab" series featured a costumed or masked hero, or perhaps just someone who, like Diamond Jack, acquired a mystic artifact that he could use to manipulate mystic forces. Is anyone able to say for certain if the series was mystery man free or if Walt Worthington eventually became someone who could have answered to the name Blazing Scarab, or at least controlled arcane forces through the use of the Blazing Scarab itself?

Thanks (hopefully) in advance,
Jon

The last I recall of my Champions, they were with OtherEric to be scanned. If they aren't on the GAC, then perhaps Eric still has them. Since I can't seem to locate them here, I'm HOPING that he still does. Eric? Please say you have not sent them back yet, because otherwise I don't know where they are.

My recollection is that the "Blazing Scarab" strip was NOT a super hero strip - but near-East/Egyptian mystery/suspense type.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Thanks, Jim.

I have the impression that "Blazing Scarab" probably isn't a mystery man/superhero series either, certainly it wasn't when it started, but I couldn't rule out that it turned into something similiar before it was terminated. Incidentally, the question is second hand and was asked of me by a librarian acquintance who is doing some research. The only time I have ever seen anyone mention the Blazing Scarab is in the "Second Bananas" essays in Lupoff's "The Comic Book Book," and that starts with a mention of the Blazing Scarab among a number of more identifiable names, and it ends with a line to the effect, "I never did get around to describing the Blazing Scarab, did I?"

I have Champion 3-7 still, Jim.  As well as Big 3 #6, Fantastic 17, 18, 20, and 22, and Speed 1-4 and 7.  On a couple of those somebody else beat me to scans, I believe.  They're all high on my list, I'm just riding the first wave of "I need to share these ASAP" I got from the Easterns before I go back and get them.

THANKS, Eric,
I was beginning to doubt either my system or my memory - one of those was faulty. I am SO glad that it was my memory. I will trust the system I'm using until it stops working.

Absolutely no rush on those books, especially since I'm leaving for France in a week.

I wasn't worried on your behalf, Jim.  But I wanted to assure people looking for the books they were high on my list and I wasn't going to keep stalling on them since I had more books from you.  They've been waiting patiently for me to get to scanning them.  :D
