Zip Comics/Steel Sterling
« on: January 02, 2010, 11:22:23 PM »

Hi. I see Zip Comics is on the GAC, so it's public domain. Just curious as to how that was determined, not because I don't believe it, but I'm curious as to how that was researched.

Would it have been a search through these:
Copyrights Etc. Info:
                                  http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/public_domain/
                                  http://cocatalog.loc.gov/
                                  http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/
                                  http://librarycopyright.net/digitalslider/
                                  http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/cce/                               http://www.law.duke.edu/cspd/comics/http://ia360629.us.archive.org/1/items/Copyright_Search_Reports_Superman_1940s_cartoon_short_films/

Also, was thinking of putting Steel Sterling (for example) up on the PDSH site.

Most renewals prior to 1978 (that is, from books published 1950 and earlier) would be found in the CCEs.  If you check Ockerbloom's page (the UPenn URL), you'll see a special compiled report on "First Renewals of Periodicals," or somesuch.  It may not be perfect (being generated by hand), but the easiest place to start is there, since it's alphabetized.  Look for Zip Comics.  If it isn't there, they didn't find a renewal in any of the listings (to 1978).
