I actually remember buying this as a kid - the Phantom Viking was my favourite. Don't know if it's copyright - if it's the companion to Valiant, it is probably owned now by Rebellion.

Found a story online.
Apparently this was considered a semi rip off of Marvel's Thor character.
Actually though the Phantom Viking origin would fit well into an Agents of Shield story line.
In that story line certain Norsemen had been given objects of Asgard technology to increase their powers so they could join in defeating the Black Elves and other Enemies of Odin and protect Earth as well.  Then such an ancient object is discovered and put to use by a modern Norse warrior cult.
