Having just watched the amazing Nebula-75 video (in supermarionation AND superisolation), I have to ask what are your favourite fan films?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqivVh5KvTw

I've already commented I think on the two amazing Star Trek Continues series (also on YouTube), so good that it's now considered by many as part of the canon. There's also a decent Dr Who FanFilm Series with a guy who really should have been cast as one of the canonic doctors.

But what would you choose?

What is a Fan Film?

Is it a film made by a fan of the character or film series who is NOT a professional (an amateur) filmaker?

Yes, overall that is correct.

Sometimes, the distinction becomes blurred - it may be the 'fan film' is made by people who are professionals within the industry but are making the film on a vigilante basis because they are fans or because they have raised money through crowdfunding or sponsorship. They are thus providing themselves with some short-term (usually poorly paid) work but which may also have the added benefit of advertising their talents.

As an illustrator/animator, for example, you might make a cartoon movie of a public domain character like Blondi and post it on social media.

Andrew, thanks for pointing me there. That is excellent. Whoever did that has work in animation when this is over for sure.
Then there is this
The Greatest Star Trek Series You're Not Watching -- Full Episode!

The
VALIANT web series isn't  exactly fan made, but not totally professional either. Made to show the potential of the Valiant universe for movies.

Most fan films imo are poor stuff.  However, I do have a few that, again imo, are worth watching more than once.  I'll post links to them later - I have an Italian Jitsi meet this morning and that'll take time.  Just to whet your appetite, think Cybermen and Daleks.

The quality of those films is not bad.  They are not my kind of films.  I didn't like "Star Wars", or even "Star Trek".

We don't entirely disagree. I'm no great fan of Star Trek or of 'Star Wars' Definitely not a trekie. Could spend ages in criticism of those universes.  The last films of both franchises were both particularly dreadful. But I can be entertained by them with a certain level of attachment. I can always live in hope.
I posted those two links just as examples of non-professional work in that genre.

Actually it occurs to me if that professional level of work can now be done away from Major Studios, we may be, hopefully on the cusp of a major shift in creativity in the film world. Can't come too soon for me.
My presence on this site may appear to be contradictory, but I have often found 'fandom' when it becomes lifestyle or worship, can be quite a negative and destructive force. And no, not always.

I most certainly did - thanks. I am speaking as someone who when working as a teacher would walk down the corridors at break time pointing a ruler from my side at students I disliked (most of Year 9) and whisper to myself, "Ex-ter-mi-nate! Ex-ter-mi-NATE!"
