Terrific news that Matthew Dooley has won the Wodehouse Prize, the UK's premier award for comic fiction, with Flake.

It's the first time a graphic novel has ever won the prize.

Whilst Flake is full of fun, there's a serious side to the ice cream vans that pepper British seaside and tourist resorts during the summer and prowl the streets of high-density housing in inner cities during the winter.

They are very territorial and bring in big money. Most local authorities overcome this by licensing areas to each van - but sometimes it gets out of hand as in the Glasgow Ice Cream Wars:

I don't know if there's an equivalent to ice cream vans in other countries - steamed oyster carts in Turkey perhaps....
