Hello from the North Star State - Minnesota!
« on: August 10, 2020, 12:14:23 AM »

Hi!  Very happy to be here.  This site is amazing!  I feel like a kid in a candy store.  So much so, that it is somewhat overwhelming.

I've developed an interest in the Golden Age of comic books, as I really don't have much knowledge of the era outside of Superman, Batman, et al.  Particularly keen on tracking down Alex Toth early works.  Happy to have found this site.

And G'day to Minnesota from the Waratah State! Always like to extend a welcome to those newly discovering CB+!
That's NSW in Australia and the Waratah is the state flower. The State Rugby Union team is the Waratahs. Now that  I think about it they may be the only football team in the world named after a flower. Definitely not wimps tho.
I love your non-de-plume.
I always believed that George Lucas' student graduation film THX1138 was his best film - followed by 'American Graffiti'. I;ve always believed that it was strongly influenced by the Russian novelist, Yevgeny Zamyatin's Dystopian novel 'WE'. I never miss a chance to reference it to anybody who might be interested.
Here is a good article on 'We'

Welcome THX1968!

I can also recommend 'We':

Zamyatin's life reads like a dystopian novel in itself:

If you want a more direct antecedent to THX1138, you might read Ayn Rand's Anthem. It's a quick (and disturbing) read at 100 pages - and of course, everyone should read EM Forster's short story The Machine Stops.

Okay, that's me done preaching for the day

Hello THX1968.  We're very happy to welcome you here.  I fully understand your interest in Alex Toth.  His work is superb and he was a true giant of comics.  There are a lot of sites available and I'm sure you have found a lot of them.  If you haven't already read it, might I suggest you track down Bravo For Adventure?  It is exceptional, one of my favourite comic book stories.
Enjoy yourself here and please join in the conversations.

There is quite a lot of Toth's work here. Just do a site search from the search bar at the top right of the page.
When it spins up the results,  you need to scroll down the page, because the top half of the page will still show blank. And the list of pages at the bottom is small and quite hard to read.
Don't know how it came to be set up that way. Alex Toth's original Dell Zorro's are all here.

Well this post is for all the Toth fans out there. Thought about starting a new thread, but THX1968 started this.
Paw, you do realize that posting that link to the doco on Toth has totally screwed up my planned day?
Oh, and the story about the meeting of minds between Toth and Kirby, which resulted in neither having a clue about what the other was talking about? Priceless! And logical, because while they are both genius, their work has very little in common.

That in turn led me to these places.

Hey, and if I can destroy your day, success!
[Said tongue very much in cheek!]
The link for 'Toth's ten rules' on MakingComics.com didn't work for me, so if anybody has a copy of that or a link to get it, I would be obliged.
Its probably on 'Tothfans' but I haven't yet had time to look.

Cheers!

Welcome!  You've come to the right place to find a lot of new-to-you comics to read, and a lot of people to talk to about comics, who know a lot about Golsden Age comic books.  I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment from spending time here.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone!  I have found quite a bit of Toth already (and yes, I am a huge fan of Bravo), but I suddenly found myself distracted by 'Phantom Lady'.  Tons of great stuff here and I'm having a blast!
