'Sci Fi obviously didn't sell' Not a happy conclusion Mr Happy! Not sure why you would come to that conclusion? In the early 60's my memory tells me that Comics issue distribution was between 1 and 3 hundred thousand. 1952 was a good year both for comics and SF.
This site lists collectors item comics from 1952 and 2 of them are SF. Both Atlas [Marvel] and DC had a range of SF comics through the 50s.
According to this site, 1952 was a high point for comics.
[By December of 1950 there were a total of 2070 titles published. A fair number, but more than 700 less than were published in 1952. At the end of 1951, there were already 2295 published in total; jump ahead to 1953 and that number stands at 2551.] I can't verify that but Wow! I've always said the 50s was a great decade to have been alive in!
Also thanks to you (and anybody else) who points me to work by Alex Toth.
However, 'Outlaws of Space' while definitely Toth's layouts, is lacking something. I'm going to go out on a limb and say 'inked by George Tuska'
Evidence. Faces.
