Today we commemorate the 111th birthday of Barry Appleby - one of the greats of British newspaper comic strip creators. Barry brought us the perfect middle-class sounding board of the Gambols:

The Gambols are often dismissed as light and fluffy but they do deserve a more detailed analysis - they represent an aspirational England of happy families, financially secure, living in a modest though comfortable setting wrapped in a blanket of love, respect and joyful routine that it appears fewer and fewer are able to achieve in real life as the fractures in our society turn into gaping crevices.
