Wikipedia tells us that McVickar was born into a prominent New York family. He made a fair amount of money as an artist for magazines like Life and Harper's Bazaar. He invested this in real estate and eventually became head of his own real estate trust company. He and his wife were included in Ward McAllister's famous Four Hundred, a list of New York's "best families." 2000 people attended his wedding. McVickar died of pleurisy at the age of 55.
