How wonderful to have this – the first Girl Annual. Every story a gem – and just look at the artwork on strips like Flick & the Vanishing New Girl. Look at the art too on Lettice Leefe – Crime at St Addledegga’s – very progressive for 1953.

Short tales of mystery, secrets and suspense with some surprisingly menacing villains (I was chewing my blanket reading this in bed) and a sprinkling of dogs, horses and other furry creatures.

I’d never heard of Jeanette Altwegg before despite being a winter sports fan (biathlon is my favourite) so of course I had to look her up. She’s still with us, I’m pleased to say – aged ninety. The article on the history of clothes taught me a thing or two.

As well as the usual stuff about how to be a ballerina or air hostess, I was pleased to see articles on women in the RAF and women scientists and inventors. A good balance all round.
