2 comments. First, "Carlo" looks remarkably like "Napoleon," a dog featured in a newspaper comic beginning in 1932 by Clifford McBride. The Dell Four Color here (/?dlid=38447) has art by Roger Armstrong, but you can still see the resemblance (lots of McBride strips can be found in Famous Funnies).

Second, poor Carlo takes an awful lot of physical abuse in this story. Sure, he gets into a lot of mischief, but humans treat this dog very badly.

Also agreed.

This book would not have been printed today, with current attitudes toward animal cruelty.
Just goes to show how much attitudes have changed.
