Jumbo Comics 01 (Sept. 1938) marks the first apprentice of Sheena, Queen of the Jungle and the 2nd of Jack "King" Kirby in the one page adventure strip "The Count of Monte Cristo" (as "Jack Curtiss"),  The Diary of Dr. Hayward (as "Curt Davis"), and Wilton of the West (as "Fred Sande").

'The Diary of Dr. Hayward' would one day become recurring strip 'Stuart Taylor in Weird Stories of the Supernatural'. Other long-term strips are "ZX-5 Spies in Action" "Spencer Steel" (these do not present :( )and

It isn't on site yet -- can you upload it to the site? I haven't learned how to upload yet, but it is next on my list of things to learn in order to help out.

If you can't upload it, perhaps one of the regulars can help you -- do you know if this is an original? I'm not sure we can host it if it has reprinted material -- but I defer to Narf and the regulars on that due to his having more experience in the matter.

Regardless, check your pm's...

B.

It doesn't seem to be reprinted material. I cant upload due to my password probs.

I have downloaded the file and taken a look. It is 18 pgs, with a color cover, and black & white reprints of some stories.  I took the liberty of repackaging the file after renaming the jpgs to sort correctly, and will 'up' it for Dr. Mindshadow.

Nigel,

Does anyone have a fiche or other scan available? Now that I think of it, I bet that I have the Blackthorne edition squirreled away in my own archives.

That's because I am still waiting for the blog owner to respond. He's been out of action for a while and I'm not sure when he's coming back. If he does respond to me I will let you know immediately. who knows he has the entire issue?  ;D
There are also some of their black-and-white reprints from what seemed to be the other eight issues of jumbo Comics. Because the company reprinted only the first issue the other issues are a mystery to me. Any ideas as to where they might have come from?

Apart from its rareity through age the early issues of Jumbo are hard to come by in scan form due to there oversized format, hence the 'Jumbo' name.

Interesting to hear there could be fiches of some of these available though the fact they are in black and white is a bit mysterious as I do believe Jumbo was always published in colour.

Much of the early material did first see the light of day in black and white form in the commomweath title 'Wags' so maybe that might be part of the explaination.

If the reprint was not copyright then yes we can host them here. That is why it is OK to care IW reprints.
The Blackthorne are copyright based on the process of removing the color. If it had been reprinted in color it would likely have been recolored so that would be copyright.

I wonder if Steve Schanes or Ann Fera are still around...it would be nice to have the Blackthorne material onsite. An "Authorized Reprints" section could work.

Regardless, I came across this article and it is packed to the brim with interesting stories concerning Blackthorne's history (and has some nice Sheena pages).

Quote
At one time, nearly all American comic books were created in New York City, distributed by union trucking firms, and sold on newsstands or in convenience stores. Only a few dozen comic-book stores existed. Throughout the '60s and '70s, two New York publishers had a stranglehold on comic production -- Marvel (birthplace of Spider-Man and the Hulk) and DC (Superman and Batman's home turf). Few competitors in the four-color field managed to swipe more than crumbs from the $400 million annual pie, either on the publishing side or in newsstand distribution, the latter business having reputed mob-related monopolies.

Then along came Bill and Steve Schanes.

It's things like this, boox, that make me livid. I don't want to denigrate Bill and Steve in any way, but to imply (or baldly state) that they created the Direct Market is simply wrong.

I stopped reading the article when I read:
Quote
The explosion of comic shops from the late '70s onward was essentially made possible by Los Bros Schanes, along with rivals such as Phil Seuling...

I was there before, during and after, and the Direct Market was created by Phil Seuling when he went to DC and Marvel in 1974 and negotiated non-returnable comics in sufficient quantities that he couldn't be ignored. He achieved those numbers by partnering with Bud Plant, effectively splitting the US in half at the Mississippi and each distributing his share to the burgeoning networks of comic book shops - of which Bill and Steve were a part. Comic shops could exist without selling new comics every week, but they could never grow without them.

When Phil and Bud arranged for the shops, which had dealt primarily in back issues up to that point, to order the new issues and actually get them a week before the drugstores and newsstands, there was a sea change that changed comics forever.

Lots of people were involved in the growth and the success of the Direct Market, but only two people actually created it. And they weren't named Bill and Steve.

Jim,

This is one of the reasons why I am glad you are here -- you were there and knew many of the names that are only names to youngsters such as myself.  ;D

Thanks!

It's funny, boox,
that I've so many friends in the "business" of selling comics, but I've never been anything but a fan and a collector. I've been on the fringes of some major happenings, but never really a part of them. Wrote a few things, published a couple of fanzines, but that's as close as I've ever come.

And, yes, thanks for reminding me that I'm OLD.

Peace, yung'un, Jim (|:{>
