I am amazed to read of an 'Andy Griffith Show', this show was never shown in Germany, so it is practically unknown in this country. There aren't many U.S.-TV series, that haven't been shown in Germany, the A.G.-Show is one of them. But of course we know 'Matlock'! :-)

Were comedies where the main characters were law enforcement officers ever popular in Germany? I know little about german society but I got the impression they were very serious when it came to LEO.
England and the USA have always had a more irreverent attitude towards both LEO and military life.

To my knowledge, The Andy Griffith Show was never shown in Australia, but in my state we didn't get TV till about 1960, so I may be wrong. I had no desire to watch it. I was aware of it from TV magazines, but it just seemed too 'small town ideal' American for me.
Like most of the world we were saturated with US TV but also, via the ABC - our clone of the BBC, by British TV shows.

Absolutely, even in Germany people always liked to make fun of the authorities, but often behind closed doors. At the time, there was also no problem with that on TV, as long as it was series or comedies from other countries. But from the 80s years on, german tv also grew up.
