The Lambiek site has a link to 'Strippers Guide' where the original research was done.
I'm pretty sure we have other work by Myer Marcus on CB+ Check the Lambiek article for a - fairly substantial - list of his works.
Also, its likely that in the newspapers of the day, the Strip was printed at least twice as large as we have it here. Would have been a lot easier to read.
