I remember all too well the school drills and the testing of the air raid sirens (every Wednesday at noon!). Even as kids, none of us really believed any of this would keep us safe.
Many years later, my brother and I got a Summer job cleaning out all the local air raid shelters. Sold some of the gasmasks to the local Army surplus store. The ration packs contained Charms hard candy, which we ate, and 20 year old Lucky Strikes, which we tried to smoke! At least not all of this stuff was wasted! Cheers, Bowers
