Fizzfop has a published little GA pub quiz, right here....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EODN9SrjMI

For obvious reasons, let's not discuss the answers but I will just say that A) I can't BELIEVE I got question 3 wrong and B) I am Solomon Grundy (this will make sense at the end)

Enjoy!

I find it hard to believe that both of you got only one correct.  I got 3 out of five, and I've hardly ever read a superhero story, and I've had almost no contact with superhero fans (other than on this forum).

Huh? Since when are Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster cousins. Everything I've ever read about them has them as classmates in Cleveland.

I made a right mess of my answers.  I was pretty useless.  As for S&S, fizzpop does make a few mistakes and omissions in his videos so perhaps this statement is wrong.  But I don't know.
There are a lot of folk posting these comics history videos but fizzpop is about the best, imo.

As far as I remember, Joe Schuster was born and partially raised in Toronto.  As a Canadian, I knew that, as he is claimed by Canada as one of the Canadian pioneers of the comic book industry.  His family moved to Cleveland, and if I remember correctly, he ended up attending Siegel's school.  But their having been schoolmates didn't preclude their also having been cousins, and knowing each other through family ties, beforehand.  Jewish families are generally clannish, and often reside in family "complexes" (aggregations of adjacent homes or nearby in the same neighbourhood).  We lived in one of those in Winnipeg, Canada, but had cross visitations with our other family aggregation in Chicago, until we finally moved there when I was a teenager.  Schuster and Siegel could well have been cousins, who, being of similar ages, probably hung out together, whenever their extended family got together during summers and longer holiday work breaks in Toronto and Cleveland.  And so, they were best friends in high school, after Schuster moved there.

I have read several times, over the years, that they were cousins.  And I have also read many articles that stated that they were school friends, but where their being cousins wasn't mentioned.  I guess the jury is still out on that, given that casual articles written by people 75+ years after the fact, quoting 4th or 5th generation copycat sources, can often get things wrong.

I was also under the impression they were brothers.
I ran across an extensive critique of their work in of all places a NAZI propaganda screed I found among similar works on the net.
They nitpicked about minor stuff like the German troops in one story using High German which had evolved into Yiddish long before.
If I ever run across that site again I'll post a link. Its an example of unintended humor as the German author comes across as a parody of himself and state controlled media before its over.

"High German"(e.g. Modern High German) (AKA "Hochdeutsch" in The German tongue) is (and has been for a long time) the national language of Germany, which German military troops WOULD have been speaking for their entire time as a unified nation (since 1866). I presume you meant Old High German, from which Yiddish evolved.

A link to the SS critique of Superman.
https://research.calvin.edu/german-propaganda-archive/superman.htm

I can't imagine that this SS propaganda was read by very many Americans.  It seems like a wasted effort.  There was plenty of prejudice against Jews in USA at that time.  And I doubt that this stab aimed at Superman affected that amount to any degree worth considering.

The excerize being pointless from our point of view is a large part of why this critique shows just how much American comics got under the Gnat-si skin.
Ignoring the comics altogetherwould have been the better course for them.
American paperback and comic characters were very popular in Germany pre WW2. AH himself was a great fan of westerns.

Apparently prejudice against jews didn't have any noticable effect on the popularity of the Superman character among US readers.

No it didn't.  Most Superman fans didn't know that the creators and earliest writers and artist of the superman stories happened to have been born into Jewish families.  And even IF they HAD known that fact, that wouldn't have induced 99.9 % them to even consider stopping reading his comic books.

Yes, The Nazis banning the distribution of US print entertainment and films in Germany was a big loss for The German public's enjoyment during the late 1930s and through WWII.  That is part of the reason that Disney Comics became such a success there during the early 1950s.  That's why The Hamburger Donaldists (later to become a national group), who grew up reading Disney comic books during The 1950s, as well as The Dutch and Danish kids, who were deprived of The Disney strips during wartime occupation, became the most fanatical Carl Barks fans in The World, and The Italians, who worshiped Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse newspaper strips during the 1930s, became the World's most fanatical Mickey Mouse fans during the late 1940s and 1950s.

New quiz is up. I got 6/10 though that included a couple of lucky guesses. This made me Kingpin level.

Well, I got Kingpin level, [7] the ones I got wrong are those about Spiderman involving other media than the comics.
Cheers!

I got 5 out of 10 correct on the quiz, and I've never read even one Spiderman comic book, nor have I seen any of the films.  And I've never discussed Spiderman with Spiderman or superhero comics fans.  My only knowledge of his story comes from TV commercials for the films, and I used logic in guessing on the multiple choice questions.  For the Superman quiz, I actually had some knowledge gained from reading a few of his end of 1930s and early 1940s comics, and watching his 1940s cartoon serials, and watching his 1950s US TV series.
