The steering wheel was obviously a stick-on plastic one which could be moved from one side to the other????
Much like I had when a child travelling on the upper deck of the bus, right at the front, of course.

While obviously an error by the artist, there were automobiles, boats and aircraft that had wheels that could be swung over from one side to the other. Not many, more a oddity, though in some cases with boats and planes necessary due to the small size of cockpits.
