Ami_GFX's uploads
« on: February 16, 2011, 10:26:02 PM »

I just scanned and uploaded Unusual Tales 27 to the Charlton section of Silver Age Sidestreet. I read the fine print to the section afterwards about checking the PD status. It should be OK as it just fills a gap between issues already on this site. I got a copy of Charlton's one shot Outer Space along with the Unusual Tales 27 which has a Ditko story in it and, like several 1968 Charltons, no copyright notice at all, just a statement that it is published 4 times a year on the first page. I would be happy to scan and upload this as well if it is OK with the admins.

We appreciate your willingness to upload files. Unfortunately the upload function is not working you must use ftp. Do you have the ability to ftp? There are several free ftp programs. Let me know if you are able to ftp and I will send you the info.
And yes if Outer Space has not copyright we would be glad to host it.

The one I uploaded is a one shot from 1968 with no copyright notice, not the late 50s run. There are several Charltons from late 1968 with no copyright notice. The Mysterious Suspense 1 featuring the question is another as is Blue Beetle 5. I wonder what the story is behind this. Blue Beetle 5 came out dated November 1968 almost a year after Blue Beetle 4 dated December 1967 which was the last issue before Dick Giordano quit Charlton and they canceled the action hero line. Charlton advertised a Blue Beetle 6 in comics with a January 1968 cover date that they never printed and this is just about when they started doing their copyright notices right. Blue Beetle 5 and Mysterious Suspense 1 both have Ditko running wild with his Ayn Rand influenced philosophy and little editorial supervision--like he knew that there wasn't going to be a next issue and he could do whatever he wanted to with these books.

You comment makes me wonder Ami. Maybe Charlton was afraid that with Giordano gone he would use their work since there had been no copyright, so they started adding one. Blue Beetle 5 is wild. It is however, mild compared to Mr. A. Anything can be carried to an extreme. I agree with personal accountability but Randian stuff in Mr. A. is extreme.

With Charton he had to work within the comics code which was still running strong in 1968. I've got Avenging World and Wha in my Ditko collection and, as much as I like Ditko, these books have always been a bit too much for me. I enjoy looking at the art but I can hardly read the text.

Mr A is a little more "fun" than the other two even with the strong Randian influence

I scanned today and just uploaded Charlton's Space Adventures 42 to the ftp site. This is the last issue with Captain Atom and has 3 Captain Atom stories with one illustrated by Steve Ditko, The Silver Lady from Venus. She bears a resemblence to Clea who appeared in Dr. Strange a few years later. ;D ;D
