Hello, all!

Hello, All...

I'm introducing myself all over again in this new incarnation of this site.  I was a visitor/member of the old incarnation.

I'm Kurt Hathaway....screenname MoonDood...comic collector and comics pro for almost 30 years.  Mostly as a letterer, but also as a writer and editor.  Started at DC comics as a young pup and have worked for just about every other publisher out there.

I also run a small video business...mostly doing concert videos.

A thank you, too--to all the scanners out there.  I discovered the original incarnation of this site when I was scanning some GA books of mine before selling them on ebay several years ago.  It then occurred to me that I'm probably not the first to think of scanning a comic book.  With some poking around the web, I discovered the scanning community.

WOW--Finally!  I can read all those wonderful comics I would drool over at the conventions!

I've contributed my meager scan collection along the way, so I can appreciate those who scan book after book for our enjoyment!

Looking forward to poking around some more here.

Kurt I sure have a better appreciation for how hard the job of letterer is. I did my two member created comics where I changed the pd stories. Lettering is a hard job to make look right. Thanks for your contributions here and to comics in general.

Yeah, I started before computers when it was still pen, ink and sore fingers.  That WAS hard!

I was the first to start using computers to make comics lettering back in the early 90's...it took a while to work out the kinks, but I'm so used to it now that I whizz through the work pretty quickly.

I learned lettering from Johnny Costanza when I had him as a teacher during my first year (1979-80) at the Kubert School.  Boy was he good!  Does anybody still use the Ames lettering guide and do hand-lettering anymore or is it all done by computers?

Curious

Lettering is like art on top of art, I've seen very good and very bland. I also remember A. Machine, Charlton's go-to "guy". Welcome to CBP, moondood, and I hope to be hearing some inside stories from you and josemas in this space. It's nice to have some real live pros here - as well as fellow comics lovers, of course!

The lettering actual kept me from buying Charlton war and westerns in the day. I just could not get past the ugly of it.

Joe....sure, there are some who still do it by hand, but not so much in the mainstream publishing world...mostly online stuff.  A few years ago, Steve Rude wanted me to letter his Moth book--but he insisted on hand letters.  I had to turn him down since I'd already retired my drawing table.

Narf...yeah, those books were hard to look at.  Looking at the scans now, though, it looks like they were using some kind of typesetting system akin to what we do now [but a more primitive form]. It looks like hand lettering [kinda], but it's some kinda machine--as Robin indicates.  The EC stuff was pretty machine-like but it was actually done by hand with a contraption that made it all look uniform.
