A nice scan of what looks like a well read issue.  Only Sgt Spook is close to a superhero story in the Kid Eternity ghost vein.

Thanks Eric!

Actually, the book is in relatively nice shape other than the cover.

Also, just a heads up for everybody about something on the way:

Great Action Comics 9 has arrived and been scanned; I'm sending the raw scans to Yoc to prepare for posting.  I'm handing it off in this case since Yoc has the PL archives in mind down the line; I'm not sure how soon the issue itself will be ready to post.

And, to answer a question from somebody I can't remember in a thread I can't find:

I paid $27 plus shipping for the Great Action 9 in Fn 6.0; which was slightly over guide but seems like a quite reasonable price to me.  Sadly, I wound up loosening the cover while scanning it.  Then again, if I could convince somebody it was really a coverless PL 23 I could probably get more for it than I could with the GA 9 cover.  Not only does the PL 23 list for that much more, but the GA 9 cover is so badly drawn it's almost beyond belief:

Harvey Comics used to do a 'Story Behind The Cover' feature in there books explaining what was happening on some of there covers.

Maybe 'one day' Great Action Comics_009 will recieve the same treatment and after 50 years the secret behind the 'Blond' Phantom Lady will FINALLY be revealed !  ;)

Anyway thanks for going to the trouble of buying and scanning this book, a sometimes thankless task as I discovered myself only today.

Funny idea about passing off GAC as an 'original' book although i'm sure that your only kidding, also I suspect that the more recent ads and smaller size of GAC might just give the game away.

The real story is Waldman (sp?) was running a fly-by-night, questionably legal operation.  I don't recognize the cover artist, and the art is done poorly enough that I'm not sure it was by a professional artist at all.  To be fair, it is at least based on something in the book itself.

Meanwhile, while we wait for Yoc to do his part on that issue, let's get some other Baker material out there:

And, one more from me this week before I go back to work tomorrow:

Animal_Comics_017.cbz uploaded to the FTP

The bad news:  This issue, like 18, is down to just 36 pages.

The good news:  26 of them- everything but Uncle Wiggily and the text pieces- is by Kelly; and it's the first time Pogo ever has a starring role on a cover.  (There's a very small Pogo in the background on the cover of 16.)  So enjoy!

Animal_Comics_023.cbz uploaded to the FTP

This is another Kelly-heavy issue; in addition to the FC, BC, and 12 page Pogo story we have a 10 page Goozy story.  And I'm not sure Kelly didn't draw at least one of the fillers in this issue as well; I would appreciate if any of the other Kelly experts here could give their opinion.

Thanks for Animal 23 Eric!

For what it's worth I see Kelly in the following:
Cover, Pogo, Donkey's Dilemma, Purpose of the Porpoise, Goozy, perhaps the Magician's Rabbit (?), and back cover.

That's a LOT of Walt Kelly!

I wasn't personally thinking the Magician's Rabbit was Kelly, but I was about 95% sure on Purpose of the Porpoise and was wondering on the Donkey's Dilemma.  But my source for "What did Kelly do in Animal Comics" ( http://www.igopogo.com/a_c__index.htm ) didn't include those pages, so I wanted a second opinion.  It's interesting, at least for me, how hard the Donkey's Dilemma page is to be sure on; since Kelly didn't often draw Donkeys.

Eric, the index to Animal Comics on the I Go Pogo website is part of a much larger work covering all of Kelly's comic book work published over several issues of The Fort Mudge Most, a fanzine published by the Pogo Fan Club.  I wrote those articles and compiled the index, which was pretty much just my eyeballing all known Kelly comics.  In the course of the articles, I found what looked like a couple of new stories and refuted some others.  But it was all just my opinion, no data to back it up.  Steve Thompson of the Pogo Fan Club says he has discovered some work payment receipts among the Kelly family papers that may shed some light on what exactly is or is not Kelly. But until that list is made public, we're all on our own.

The Purpose of the Porpoise does definitely look like Kelly (how did I miss that one? I'll have to check my original index!), but I would still say no to The Donkey's Dilemma and The Magician's Rabbit.  There were many artists with similar styles doing the same comics at the same time.  The hardest to spot are the Kelly covers on Walt Disney's Comics & Stories, where nearly everyone was using the same style.  I hear Carl Buettner is the artist on some covers that seem to be obviously Kelly.  Then there's the possibility that Kelly pencilled and someone else inked, making it unrecognizable.

Towards the end of the 1940's, Kelly's work got so heavy that he began employing assistants.  Their work is most evident in most of the Pogo Possum comics where the style varies wildly from one story to the next.  This is just a long way of saying, "your guess is as good as anybody's."

But my real reason for writing is to thank you and the others that are making all this Kelly work available to fans this way.  Despite the reprinting projects that have happened erratically over the years, so much of Kelly's work has been overlooked and forgotten.  This is probably the only way to keep the Mother Goose and Fairy Tale comics available to a new generation.  (Not to mention all the other Golden Age greats that nobody can find or afford any more).  Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the background info RMD!  And PLEASE, let us know if anything new is learned when and if those Kelly payment papers become public.

Walt had such a lovely, flowing, relaxed style.  And his eyes are usually a big giveaway when he wasn't trying to follow a 'house' style.  Animal 23 was great for showing an early looking Pogo in a very familiar storyline.  I find it interesting that Kelly had the character's personalities mostly worked out before he had their 'look' finalized.

I had no doubt on Purpose.  Donkey's page two had a couple elements that struck me as perhaps Kelly but then again maybe not.  I tend to agree that Magician's Rabbit isn't Kelly.

The Kelly Project on GAC has been going just great and along with the Scribbly Project the last couple months have been a real joy to be a scan collector!   ;D :D

Yes, thank you for the background!  I need to go and look at the other Animal Comics I have, there are one or two other filler pieces I think might be Kelly's.  I think part of the issue is that Kelly really was Dell's superstar artist then and a lot of the Dell house style was drawn from him.  (Did any other creator get their name on the cover of Dell books during the 40's?  Or at least any other creator actually doing the work; Walt Disney and Leon Schleisinger (sp?) don't count.)  So what looks like a very slight hint of Kelly in a couple of the donkey faces might just be some other artist drawing on Kelly's influence.
Amusingly, I just bought a copy of Animal 9 online where the seller claimed the Pogo story wasn't Kelly; I can see why somebody not familiar with the history of the strip could think that.  :)   I'm very happy to be making the Kelly material I can available; you're quite welcome.

Onto other scanning projects:

Captain_Marvel_Adventures_030 uploaded; this one is mostly paper with 4 pages of fiche fills.  And as I mentioned, I've just ordered a copy of 44 that will complete our run of the Monster Society serial once I get it and get it scanned.

Thanks for contributing to our knowledge of Walt Kelly rmdavidson, always nice to see new members who can shed some light on the history of Golden Age comics and the artists who created them.
