One thing that does come to mind:  I only started seriously collecting in the mid-1980's, when I was a teenager.  (I still have a few issues from the 70's as original owner, but with those I was just a kid reading books.)  So when I first started learning about the hobby there was never a point where I saw SOTI treated as anything other than important.  While I do think interest in the book has faded somewhat over the past couple decades I think your comments are the first I've ever seen that questions if we should care about it at all.  And that is a VERY good question at this late stage.

Like I suggested above, I don't care that much about it myself.  I did, however, think I was asking some meaningful questions about the Almanac issue's connection to SOTI and that it was a legitimate subject for inquiry.  I've come so late to the hobby that, while there are still things to be discovered, they're few and far between.  This is a rare case where I actually felt I was figuring out something that nobody had realized before; and I love the feeling of discovery when I put something together.

I'm going to keep looking into this books SOTI connection, since I've already told others about it and have been asking questions.  (I'm not going to drop the ball for other who do care after I brought them into the discussion, if nothing else that would be rude.)  But I don't know that I'll do anything if I somehow come yet another SOTI related item.

Thank you for giving me something to think about, Jim.

I think the niche market gets smaller and smaller for most niches. Injury to the eye, a bomb, and SOTI, etc. I started my GA collecting with an effort to get at least one from each company. I have thought about having at least SOTI book and one slabbed book. May or may not bother depends on how cheap I could get them.

Here's my very serious question, guys,
Don't you get embarrassed when you see those kinds of notations blatantly touted in ads and in Overstreet? As if the fact that there is a "lingerie panel" in a comic book is something to be proud of? I mean, we're all adults here and the fact that some artist drew a bra and panties 60 years ago should NOT be something we need to dwell on. But so many collectors do exult in those books and you can get away with charging more for that issue. It makes me depressed to think that there are people out there who get excited about stuff like that. And nervous...

Fair point, Jim.  I don't know that embarrassed is the right word; I've gotten so used to the things it barely even registers any more.  Once again, something I need to think about.

I do think on reflection that SOTI references are a special case.  For better or worse, that book had a major impact on comic history even if its impact was not quite as great as some people think; neither it nor Wertham existed in a vacuum.  The fact that some people are looking for SOTI books for unsavory reasons doesn't make the documenting of them not worthwhile.  The other 'highlights' mentioned in Overstreet are a different issue entirely.  (Now I'm trying to decide if describing the nature of the SOTI reference- I.E., injury-to-eye, is relevant or not in the context of the price guide.)

SOTI is an historical fact that should be acknowledged and researched. I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. The fact that there IS a subset of fans and collectors out there who collect SOTI-mentioned comics makes sense to me, too. Like you say, Eric, it's an important part of comics history.

And I agree with you, too, Jon that Overstreet merely reflects prices.

What bothers me is that a significant market exists for "injury to the eye", "spanking panels", "lingerie panels", "cross-dressing stories", and other less-savory examples of comics art that has very little to do with SOTI and a lot to do with what I think of as the "dirty old men" contingent of fandom. This segment of collectors reminds me of Jr. High School kids out behind the bleachers snickering at someone's purloined Playboy. I am not a prude, and have many issues of Playboy in my collection. Nobody collects them or prices them based on the juvenile trivia that comic dealers use.

And while I'm ranting (and I DO realize that I am ranting, thank you very much), let me try to remind everyone that "good girl-art" USED to refer to pin-up like art that was well-drawn. The "Good" modified "Girl-Art. Nowadays, even the lousiest rendition of a partially clad female in comics is labeled "good girl art" with the price jacked up accordingly. Collectors of this stuff are not buying "art", they're buy some jejune titillation - and THAT is what embarrasses me.

no more on this from me. It's depressing.

Yeah, I think we've reached the end of useful discussion on the subject for now.  And I think that while we might disagree on some elements our basic positions really aren't that far apart.

Adventures of Peter Wheat #14 now ready for download.

Much like with the #10, I need to thank Yoc and Thom for their amazing reconstruction work on this book.

:o OMG!  :o I find the last story in that book (yes, I was drawn to that one first) to be very disconcerting.

And the attack of the Fox Giant bits continues.  Next up is My Love Memoirs #12.  This one is rare enough that I couldn't find a cover anywhere online- or at least not much of one.  It's also listed in Overstreet and the GCD as having Wood art.  I'm not sure on that; the first story has some very Wood-esque panels alongside some real garbage.  If it was a couple years later I would say it's a bad effort at imitating Wood, but it's early enough that it might just be very early work of his.  I'm interested in what others think.

Look at the seventh panel on page 2 and the third panel on page 3, Eric.

as well as the second panel on page 6.

You'll have your answer.

One of the most important things I learned about identifying art, Eric, is to check closely to see if the artist already did it for you. Sneaks have been the path to many a credit in comics.

Glad to help. Did you notice the "Sid Check" entry in the ledger? Wonder if he was involved or if it was just a nod to a friend?

Not sure, Jim.  I did notice it; it looks like the "ESQ" after Check's name was added separately.  Not sure if that means anything, though.

For those of you wondering what we're talking about:  Jim found signatures from both Harry Harrison and Wood in the story.  Which makes it fascinating for me to look at, even if it still isn't that good:  This is one of the earliest stories by Wood I've seen, coming out roughly the same time as the first issues of Weird Science and Weird Fantasy.  For every panel of good Wood art- and there are a few- there's two mediocre and one that you wonder how Wood of all people ever contributed to the drawing.  Well worth a look if you have any interest in Wood's work.

Continuing my way through the Fox Giant Variety Comics...

Jungle Lil 1 (no IFC IBC) now ready for download.

I get the impression this one didn't do very well; it only lasted one issue before changing to Dorothy Lamour.  It shows up in two of the three fox giants I own, suggesting a lot of left-over copies.  (And yes, I know three books isn't a significant sample size.)

And two more going up:

Feature Presentations 5 (The Black Tarantula) no IFC IBC

Variety Comics NN (1950)
Contains coverless, rebound copies of:  Crimes by Women 12, My Love Memoirs 12, Jungle Lil 1, and Feature Presentation 5 (The Black Tarantula).  And a one page "Treasury of Pirate Lore" on the IFC you won't find in the other scans.

Whichever form you get the books in, enjoy!

And I'm in a holding patter on my last Fox Giant as I debate how much I want to lower the grade to scan it; I literally took apart the first two but this one is in slightly better shape.

So, instead, you get Sparkling Stars #12 from Holyoke.  Enjoy!

And here's My Desire 4, no IFC IBC

This one has a fairly well known cover image, better known from its reuse on Charlton's True Life Secrets #23.  Amazingly, Fox actually has the classier of the two uses of the cover.

Two books going up:

My Secret Story #29, no IFC IBC

Almanac of Crime (1950), which contains four rebound books:
   Famous Crimes #16
   My Desire Intimate confessions #4
   Jungle Lil #1
   My Secret Story #29
which have also been posted individually, and a "Felony Files" page on the IFC you can only get here.

I did not actually rescan the Jungle Lil, instead using the scan I got when I did Variety Comics.

Overall, I think this was a fairly neat batch of books.  If I ever find more Fox Giants in the under $50 range I'll probably grab them, too!
