Champ smashes the corral, freeing the horses to escape the coming flood. Back at the hilltop, the rancher tells Champ that the cattle are still trapped. Champ and Rebel return to the ranch, Rebel opens the gate, and the cattle are on their way to safety. Champ turns back, heads for the barn, and rescues a box of mewling kittens floating in the flood waters, by transferring them to a feed bag, in which the mamma cat also crawls.

NotesCompare to other stories by Gollub in the series. Gollub's Style and composition are clear in both stories. Gaylord Du Bois's Account Books Sorted by Title compiled from the original account books by Randall W. Scott states: "Champion in Desert Rescue. 17p. For Champion, November/January issue. Sent December 29, 1954." The story is one rescue after another. The setting is the grassy high country; and the temperate desert or semi-arid climate country of the American West or Southwest, all watered by the dam, and cloudbursts. ~Dave Porta
