NotesSherlock Holmes and The Ray of Death. Written by Gianmark and drawn by G. Cossio. For those unfamiliar with this format, when you read it bear in mind that the size of the original is only 6 1/2 inches by 3 1/4 inches. So, a lot smaller than the scan.

I haven't seen this many backs of heads outside of baldness-cure ads. Cossio didn't exactly give this one his all. Still the story has a certain rough charm.

The 'Walter Lehning Verlag' brought the comic piccolo format from Italy to Germany. Piccolo is the Italian word for small. The "Piccolos" were soon a popular and handy comic format: 17 cm wide and 7.5 cm to 8 cm high. The inexpensive booklets were a huge success in Germany. Thousands of such issues have certainly appeared in various series. Unfortunately they are not public domain.

The piccolo, or lilliput, format was incredibly popular in The Netherlands (edit - and in Spain. ) and there are instances in American comics. The U.K. had it's own versions, virtually all of which were intended for young children, being Enid Blyton strips - Noddy for instance, but also Mary Mouse, and "The Twins" series.
