SynopsisNurse Bess falls in love with patient Stan. When he’s discharged, he asks her to obtain morphine from the hospital for him. Stan later says they’ll have to break up because she doesn’t fit in with his high-roller friends. Bess starts dealing drugs to earn money for nicer clothes. When her younger sister Sue arrives in town, she starts dating Stan. When Stan is hospitalised after an overdose, Bess learns Sue is also an addict. Sue is badly injured trying to steal drugs. Bess’s ex-boyfriend Artie says “you’re vicious—-a menace!” Bess turns herself in and is sent to prison.

Helen is fired and Phil is sent to jail for six months. Helen reconciles with Don, but when Phil gets out, she agrees to run off with him. However, Helen watches a woman on a window ledge decide not to commit suicide, and she regains her determination: Helen goes back to Don.

SynopsisCarla conspires with lawyer Nevin to falsify the will of the elderly woman for whom Carla is a paid companion. When Mrs. Harper dies, Carla gets her money. Doug, the woman’s grandson, was reported killed in action but returns, having been a POW. Doug is surprised when Carla inherits. Doug and Carla fall in love. She decides to back out of the swindle, but Nevin won’t let her. Carla and Nevin are both arrested. Doug doesn’t believe Carla had changed her mind until he finds a letter she had written him but never sent. Carla gets a suspended sentence and will marry Doug.
