I used to read Lion in the sixties so I thought I’d take a peek at the launch issue from ’52. Frank S Pepper’s Outlaw of Space jumps straight into the action. It introduces us to Captain Condor, currently one of the dictator’s slaves but not for long. Good fluid pencils. Frank also created Roy of the Rovers – what a legacy he left behind. The Case of the Tailor’s Dummy by John Fordice also impressed with PI Brett Marlowe. I can’t find anything about John Fordice – was it a pseudonym? Then there is the introduction of E George ‘Ted’ Cowan’s Robot Archie, still called the Jungle Robot here. Oh, what joys he will bring over the years! Definitely overdue for a revival. Ted also created The Spider, the greatest anti-hero of all – yet another British character desperately worthy of a full-on revival, audio or even a TV series.
