Fascinating wartime edition of Children’s Universe – showing Hitler on the cover with King Michael and Iron Guard leader Ion Antonescu. This is a primary historical and cultural document and should never be lost.
Inside, the lead article proclaims Bessarabia (Odessa) to be part of a Greater Romania – I’m sure that was of great interest to nine-year-olds – plus the usual mix of folklore and adventure stories – including that of Savitri from the Mahabharata (always a favourite of mine) and oddly Hugh Lofting’s Dr Dolittle! Pushing to one side the propaganda, this is a fine example of a literate children’s publication not unlike the British story papers of the time but with more emphasis on traditional themes.
