I happen to love old cookbooks. But the ads on the bottom pages of this one would tend to put you off your food.
I think today, political correctness would preclude the letter on page 3. Definitely not in a cookbook anyway.
Is Lydia E. Pinkham the individual referred to in the Song by Scaffold, (with Paul McCartney's brother) 'Lilly the Pink' ?

I agree that the format--half a page of recipe, half a page of medical discussion--seems quite odd. Also, I wonder if Lydia Pinkham had stock in a sugar refinery, as most of the recipes call for an ungodly amount of sugar (then again, this is a candy cookbook). Finally, I can't wait for my copy of "Lydia E. Pinkham's Private Text-Book Upon Ailments Peculiar to Women" arrives! Edit: Hey, I don't have to wait, it's online here: https://archive.org/details/lydiaepinkhamspr00pink/page/n4

Am I the ONLY ratbag to snicker at the woman's somewhat suggestive hand placements here? Probably, but oh well!
Beautiful illustration, despite me spoiling it. LoLoLoL ;-D

I don't know about sniggering, but given the subject of the testimonials on every page, its hard not to see both the title of the booklet and the cover as highly suggestive. In a time when some things were not talked of openly, that was deliberate and clever product placement.
The SCAFFOLD's hit, 'Lilly the pink'.
