NotesCAPTAIN JUSTICE 12 by Monty Wedd, published by Calvert Publishing in August 1956. Captain Justice is a masked bushranger who had three publishers and four #1s during the years he was published (1950 to 1963). This issue is from the second volume of his adventure. With the return of American comics, Captain Justice’s second series saw the stories relocated from the Australian bush to the Wild West, to compete with the returning foreign books on a more equal footing. If you’re a Lone Ranger (or Phantom Ranger) fan, this one might be for you.

Monty Wedd OAM (1921-2012) was a cartoonist, animator and author who left school early, trained as a commercial artist and, after military service in WWII, turned his hobby of cartooning into a new career. He worked for a range of publishers, and created Captain Justice as his signature character. Captain Justice appeared in his own comic from New Century 1950-54 (23 issues and 1 special), Calvert 1955-57 (21 issues), and Horwitz 1963 (5 issues), as well as in the anthology title Chucklers' Weekly 1958-59 and in Women's Weekly 1961-62. He also created the Scorpion and King Comet & the Space Rangers. He created a character called Dollar Bill, who was the face of introducing decimal currency in Australia. And that's before his historical strips his animation work. Wedd was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1993 for his services as a historian, writer and illustrator.
