According to Overstreet and GCD there are two nn issues of Camera Comics that pre-date #1 so this series is not yet complete.

And as far back as the Gerber Photo Journals, the existence of these two issues has been in doubt. Gerber couldn't find them, I've never seen them in 40 years of looking. Anybody else want to confirm that they DO exist?

We also have
Blue and Red Circle complete plus several Croyden one shots.

Does Red Circle #4 exist in any form other than as a cover over remaindered issues?  I have a several year old scan by Ontology of #4 with a stories
I Stalk by Night 7pp
House of Horror 4pp
Murder at Midnight 6pp
The Living Dead 5pp

This is a remaindered issue of Advs into Terror (Atlas) #3 April 1951

I have another copy in my JVJ set which is apparently a remaindered copy of Dorothy Lamour Jungle Princess (Fox).  It has a running title of "Dorothy Lamour" on every page.  However its stories:
unknown first page missing (was on ifc as usual with Fox) 10 pp
"Slave Goddess" 8pp
"The Bessaris" 2pp text
"Pirate King" 6pp
Panu in "Phantom Lord of Tooth and Claw" 5pp

do not agree with either of the two issues (#2-3) as indexed on GCD nor with Jungle Lil #1 from which the series continued.

So is this perhaps an unpublished issue?

The contents given on GCD for Red Circle #4 are:
"Aid from Yesterday" 8pp
"Date with Death" 6pp
Toni Gayle in "Maze of Mystery" 5pp
"Deserved Retribution" 1pp text
"Curse of the Ancients" 1pp text
Pete Stockridge in "Mystery of Disguise" 6pp

Toni Gayle was a character in 4 Most Comics by Novelty

I believe Camera and Red Circle should be considered complete. If someone comes up with a "real" copy we can add it. I did not know a real copy of Blazing 5 existed until last year. Jeep, Key and Lucky are all complete also. I wonder if Courage #1 exists. Gerber has no pic so I wonder if it exists.

With the recent impartation of JVJ's Authentic Police Cases St.John  we are only in need of
4, 9, 16, 20, 21, 22, 25, 27, 28, 32, 36, 37, and 38 to complete the 38 book series.

And, other than issue 4, I have all the Authentic Police Cases in hand to scan thanks to JVJ.  (We had a mislabeled book as 4 or I would have that, too.)  It will be done soon.

I just finished the scanning on Frogman books (Hillman Publications), so that series is now going to be complete as soon as the editing is done.

Animal Comics is now complete; with only four pages over the whole 30 issue run being fiche rather than paper.  A VERY nice addition to our collection, I think.  (I'm admittedly biased, to be sure.  8) )

Just a little note for Yoc here.  Earlier in the thread you mentioned that early scanners often cropped the pages tightly around the artwork, to save on bandwidth.  Actually, when I looked at the issue back in 2000 or so, there was no significant difference in filesize on cropped scans versus uncropped scans; apparently the JPG format doesn't require a lot of filespace to show relatively homogeneously colored areas.  Back then the issue was more with smaller monitors and wanting to show at least the full page width (if not height).  In full-width mode, I estimated back than that the artwork could appear as much as 40% larger when cropped.

None of these issues are on GA-UK, Geo.  Do you have them?

Tarzan has just completed another series for us!  (Sounds great when I say that.)
Death Valley 1-6 is now done in the Comic Media section.  This was a western book that had some cool covers.

Thanks to Aussie and Tarzan for the run.

Marvel Family now complete.

==============================

Hear, hear!  Now we just have to get more paper scans in there and weed out the fiche!  I scanned all my Marvel Familys and donated.  Working on Master Comics now to fill in some holes.

True enough MD.  Fiche is nice, paper is always better.
If anyone has something in paper that we already have in fiche please consider scanning it.

A quick google of 'MICROFICHE' will explain it better than me BH.
But think of the library and those big machines that will show you old newspapers, etc.
Same thing.  Photos of comics were taken decades ago and sold by a company.  Those fiche are now being scanned and cleaned up as best as possible but time and the process aren't perfect.  A paper scan will ALWAYS look better than fiche.  I've only be fooled by fiche perhaps 3 times.  Download one and you'll get to know them quick.

On GAC we call them place fillers.  Many books will likely never be scanned so this gives fans a chance to at least follow the story and have an idea of what they might look like.  As paper scans show up we remove the fiche.  I've had to take down about 6 Planet Comics fiche scans I helped create with Jon's latest uploads and I'm thrilled to do it!

what exactly is a fiche scan?>>

=================================

"Fiche" is short for microfiche.  Call it microfilm, if you like...pretty much the same thing.  The general idea is that the page image is about the size of a stamp (or smaller) on a piece of film.  When this is scanned, the grain of the film is also scanned and enlarged when the page is enlarged by the scanner or with photoshop.  The contrast of the image can be fixed only so far--since the photo image is contrasty.  They are generally grainy, contrasty, and blurry--many too blurry (for me anyway) to read--so I don't keep them if I can't read it.  A scanner can't be focused, so it's hard to scan a fiche in focus.  A paper scan or digital photos start with pages at actual size rather than stamp-size...this, plus the range of color captured by a scanner or digital camera makes the pages look more like their original source.  Pages can still be contrasty, too light, too dark, depending on the editing of the pages in photoshop, but they still look head and shoulders better than fiche scans--and can usually be fixed.  The difference is obvious.  We do appreciate what the fiche scanners bring to the table, but over time and with expanded membership, more and more paper scans will replace the fiche scans.  The bigger-ticket books out there may take longer--and may never make it to the table--for fear of damage while scanning.  But mid-range books should all make their way here.  What's been done in the past ten years is simply astonishing!  It truly is the 21st century.

What they said, plus "fiche" is a French word for "card."  So rather than the cartridges of microfilm you used to see at your local library, microfiche (which some libraries also have/had) are about twice the size of an index card, and you can see the tiny page images on the card without equipment or manipulation.  That "see," not "read."

I have to admit that I loved working with microfiche--you could flip through the cards and find the pages you needed for research without working page-by-page or hoping you have the right keywords.  If the library was interested in cooperation, you could also leave small notes between pages for the next guy.

But yeah, suboptimal for scans, but waaaay better than no scan at all.
