A lovely whimsical tale with delightful art and a neat twist in the tail! Mild-mannered Charlie Cleer, book-keeper, has a system for winning on the horses – based on Egyptian astro-numerology, so it must be good! The excitement from this story comes as each race in the accumulator bet unfolds – can Cleer’s luck (or magic) hold, or is he a complete nutcase – you will have to read it to find out.
Incidentally, I was thrilled to read the closest finish in racing history came in 1880 when three horses deadheated at Lewes racecourse with two others tied a short-head behind. Sadly, Lewes racecourse is no longer with us but what a great factoid!
