These Gerald Swan compilations are certainly interesting, and they've introduced me to a bunch of new characters. Overall, though, I'm struck by how archaic most of the strips are, both in execution and attitudes. They seem like stuff from the 1920s or 1930s, not the 1950s. Was Swan reprinting old material or did he just have backward-looking creative personnel?
