I read Grit ads in comics throughout my childhood yet only once did I ever see a copy of the newspaper. It was amidst a stack of old magazines in the Snohomish barber shop. All I remember is that is was tabloid size and the selection of comics didn't impress me--I never was a Mandrake the Magician fan. Looking it up on Wikipedia I was amazed how successful Grit was and for how long it survived. Amazingly it's still around, albeit as a bimonthly magazine. They don't seem to do the kid-salesman thing any more. As for the comic, Kurt Schaffenberger does another fine job. I was surprised to learn that he'd done a number of sponsored comics. All were quite well drawn. In my personal opinion Schaffenberger's slick, precise classic 50s art style worked even better on these promo comics than it did on DC's Superman family titles. Another nice Shaffenberger book is Braniff's "Wings of Adventure," which we also have on-site.
